Cancel, Luis R.
Artist; art administrator; lecturer; consultant. Cancel was born in New York City in 1952.
In 1978, at the age of 25, Cancel was appointed Executive Director of the Bronx Museum of the Arts, where he served until 1991. While at the museum, he received a fellowhip from the National Endowment for the Arts to research Latin American art. He traveled extensively throughout Latin America and established important contacts for the Museum with major collectors, galleries and museums. He also curated several major exhibitions including: the First, Second and Third Emerging Expressions Biennials: The Artists and the Computer; Devastation/Resurrection: The South Bronx; Krishna Reddy, a Retrospective; and Latin American Spirit: Art and Artists in the United States, 1920-1970. Cancel's education includes a B.F.A. in painting from Pratt Institute (1975), an M.A. in Museum Management/Arts Administration from New York University (1987), and an M.A. in Public Administration from Harvard University in 1990.
