Jewish Benevolent Society Ryhim Ahoovim (Brotherly Love) founded in Stockton (1851). Congregation organized soon afterward (1855). During first twenty-one years rabbi present only for short periods. Congregation adopted Reform Judaism and women were allowed to join congregation (1896). Stockton Jewish Cemetery (1851) oldest in continuous use west of Rocky Mountains. Rabbi Bernard D. Rosenberg collected genealogical and biographical information on early congregation members, as well as miscellaneous historical materials in Jewish publications (chiefly from San Francisco).
