1857 entered Indian Civil Service, served in revenue and judicial posts in the North-Western Provinces and Central Provinces; 1883 acting chief commissioner of Burma; 1884 acting chief commissioner of the Central Provinces, subsequently chief commissioner; 1887 chief commissioner of Burma; 1888 KCSI; 1890-1891 and 1892 home member of the executive council; 1892-1895 lieutenant-governor of the North-Western Provinces and chief commissioner of Oudh; 1896-1906 served on the Council of India.
