McNickle, Melvin F. (Melvin Francis), 1914-
Melvin Francis McNickle (b. Jan. 30, 1914, Doland, S.D.), U.S. Air Force officer, received his commission in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1936 after graduating from university. During World War II he served as a special observer, assistant air attaché in London, England; commanding officer, 78th Pursuit Group; and was a prisoner of war in Germany from 1943 to 1945. In the 1950s, he served with the engineering division, Air Material Command; was director of operations and training, 12th Air Force in Germany; commander, 50th Fighter Bomber Wing in Germany; and served as chief of staff, Air Force Europe HQ in Germany.
