Quarles, Donald A. (Donald Aubrey), 1894-1959

Donald Aubrey Quarles (1894-1959) was born in Van Buren, Arkansas. He received a B.A. from Yale University in 1916, and completed graduate studies at Columbia University from 1920 to 1924. He married Rosina Cotton in 1939. He went on to serve in the following capacities: Engineer, Bell Telephone Labs, 1919; Vice President, Bell Telephone Labs, 1948; Vice President, Western Electric, 1952; President, Sandia Corporation, 1952; President, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1952 to 1953; Assistant Secretary of Defense (Research and Development), 1953 to 1955; Chairman, Air Navigation Development Board, 1954; Member, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, 1954; Secretary of the Air Force, 1955 to 1957; and Deputy Secretary of Defense, 1957 to 1959.
