Berry, Carroll Thayer, 1886-1978
Artist, printmaker, and photographer, of Rockport, Me.; b. in New Gloucester, Me.; worked as mechanical draftsman in Cambridge, Mass., following graduation from University of Michigan; sent to work on the Panama Canal; contracted malaria and while recovering back in the U.S., attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art; returned to Panama and asked by the U.S. government to paint murals of the construction work; returned to U.S., 1915, and became commercial artist and illustrator in New York; worked in Chicago, moving to Wiscasset, Me., 1932 to work at printmaking, the work for which he is best known; moved to Rockport, Me., in 1945 and took up photography.
