National Music Council (U.S.)
The National Music Council was founded in 1940 by Julia Ober, Harold Spivacke, Franklin Dunham, and Edwin Hughes. It provides a forum for the discussion of issues and problems concerning music in the United States, and acts as as liason among and spokesman for its member organizations. It proposes legislation concerning music and was granted a congressional charter in 1956. Howard Hanson served as president from 1944-1967, continuing as chairman until 1971.
