Gerber, Helmut E., 1920-....

Helmut Emil Gerber was born on July 7, 1920 in Germany. He was educated at Rutgers University, New York University, and the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II, Gerber served as a Captain in U.S. Army Intelligence in the European Theater (1942-1946). He went on to teach at Lafayette College, Purdue University, the University of Texas at Arlington, Northern Illinois University, and Arizona State University. He wrote books discussing George Moore, Thomas Hardy, and Joseph Conrad and contributed numerous articles and reviews to scholarly journals. Gerber was the founder (1968) and general editor of the Annotated Secondary Bibliography Series . He also founded English Literature in Transition (1957), which he published and edited until his death on April 29, 1981.
