Nicolay, C. G. (Charles Grenfell)

Anglican priest. In 1843 appointed librarian of King's College, London and acted as chaplain and lecturer in geography. Played a major part in founding Queen's College, London, the first institution for higher education of women in England. In 1858 appointed chaplain to the British residents of Bahia (Brazil). In 1870 appointed chaplain at Geraldton WA. In Western Australia involved himself in many activities, including editor of the Perth Gazette and W.A. Times, geological surveyor, compiler of the Handboook of W.A., museum curator, chaplain of the Fremantle convict establishment, and member of the Aborigines Protection Board. His eldest son, Frederick Granville Nicolay (b. 1842) was a farmer near Fremantle, later involved with his sons in a coach and cart building enterprise in Fremantle.
