Founded on October 19, 1917 by eleven cooperating Lutheran church bodies (Church of the United Brethren, Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America, Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Evangelical Joint Synod of Iowa and Other States, General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America, General Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States, Icelandic Evangelical Lutheran Synod in America, Lutheran Free Church, Norwegian Lutheran Church of America, United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the United Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the South).
To conduct and organize the spiritual care of Lutheran soldiers in World War I. The Commission was dissolved on May 19, 1922.
