McLeish, John

John McLeish (1811-1891) was born in Dundee, Scotland and came to Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1830s. During the American Civil War, he served in the 9th Ohio Independent Battery, which trained at Camp Wood, Ohio after being organized in Cleveland on October 11, 1861. Servicemen in this full, six-gun battery fought in skirmishes and battles throughout the South, including the capture of the Cumberland Gap, the siege of Atlanta and, finally, General Sherman's march through Georgia. In December 1862, McLeish and several others in the battery were discharged for ill health and a new muster of men continued the work of the battery.
