Radbill, Samuel X., 1901-1987
Samuel X Radbill, pediatrician and medical historian, was born in Philadelphia in 1901. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1924 and married Frances Hoffman in 1925. In 1926, he opened a private practice in his home and was certified as a pediatrician in 1938. Radbill died in Philadelphia in 1987.
Radbill interned at Lancaster General Hospital and served his residency at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. After becoming certified as a pediatrician, he joined the pediatrics staff of the Philadelphia General Hospital and also helped establish several free pediatric clinics in Philadelphia. Radbill was a member of numerous professional organizations and was especially active in the Philadelphia County Medical Society. Radbill, who was also a medical historian, helped form the American Academy of Pediatrics' Pediatric History Club. He was also actively involved in the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and was an enthusiastic participant at meetings of the American Association for the History of Medicine. During his career, Radbill lectured frequently and published numerous articles on the history of medicine and pediatrics. Complementing Radbill's interest in medical history was his hobby of collecting medical bookplates.
