"In 1857, Amelia "Jennie" Akehurst moved from New York to Georgia seeking better opportunities in her chosen profession of teaching. What followed was an odyssey that took her to numerous Georgia towns as she searched unsuccessfully for a position offering sufficient remuneration along with satisfactory living and working conditions. Jennie's diaries and letters chronicle these moves, portraying a teacher's life in a wide variety of educational and geographical settings. His primary interests are in the history of American higher education and southern history...A former editor of the Georgia Historical Quarterly (1982-89), Dyer also served as chairman of the editorial board of The New Georgia Guide (University of Georgia Press, 1996), was a senior consultant for the Encyclopedia of Southern Culture, and served three terms as chairman of the editorial board of the University of Georgia Press. He has also been a member of the editorial board of the Review of Higher Education.
