Reid, Mary Martha, 1812-1894.

Governor's wife, school teacher, soldier.

Born in St. Mary's, Ga., she met and married Rev. Robert R. Reid, who became the 4th Territorial Governor of Florida. Governor Reid died in the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1841 which left his widow homeless with 2 sons, one of whom died within a year. She became a school teacher at her church's school and was noted for helping Confederate soldiers and taking over a cannon after one soldier was killed in the Civil War. After the war she relocated to Baltimore.
