Suba, Susanne, 1913-2012.

Susanne Suba was a watercolorist and an illustrator, chiefly of children's books; as well she did covers for New Yorker magazine. Susanne, who also used the name Susan, was born in Budapest, Hungary, the daughter of Miklos Suba, an architect and artist, and May Edwards Suba, a pianist and native of Brooklyn, New York. Around 1922, the family moved to New York and settled in Brooklyn. (Miklos is recorded as arriving in 1924, but drawings indicate Susanne was here in 1922.) Susanne attended Brooklyn Friends School and the Pratt Institute. Susanne began drawing at the age of three, sketching on a piece of paper while she sat under her father's drawing board. As an adult, she worked as an independent artist, doing advertisements, illustrations, and "spots" (small drawings) for New Yorker. She has exhibited in several cities and won awards for her work. She was married to writer and editor Russell McCracken.
