Farmer, justice of the peace, state legislator and member of Congress, of Amwell Township (as then constituted), Hunterdon County, New Jersey; served in the New Jersey Assembly, 1780-1785 and 1788, and on the New Jersey Council, 1790-1804, including as acting governor, 1802-1803; also served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1805-1809, and in the U.S. Senate, 1809-1815.
