White, J. William (James William), 1850-1916
Surgeon, educator and author; M.D. and Ph. D., U. of Pennsylvania, (1871); faculty, School of Medicine, U. of Pennsylvania, (1874-1911); member of staff of Louis Agassiz on U.S. Coast Survey expedition by U.S.S. Hassler for the scientific exploration of the South Atlantic Ocean (1871-1872); founded Dept. of Physical Education, U. of Pennsylvania (1884) and served its first professor and director (1884-1886); trustee, U. of Pennsylvania (1911-1916); chairman, Alumni Committee which was responsible for developing the athletic complex of Weightman Hall, the Gymnasium and Franklin Field (1904); author of works on urology, surgery and anatomy.
