Laplace, Pierre Simon, marquis de, 1749-1827
Marquis Peirre-Simon de Laplace was among the most influential French astronomers, physicists, and mathematicians of his generation. His most famous work concerns celestial mechanics, cosmogony, and probability theory. A senator, he also played a first-rank role in orienting scientific research and policies in NapoleĢon's Empire.
