Blackshear, James Appleton, 1841-1867.

James Appleton Blackshear, educator and Confederate officer, was born 5 July 1841, in Sumter County, Georgia, and died in August 1867, in Louisiana. During the Civil War, he served as a captain of infantry in the Georgia States Troops, as captain of artillery in the Provisional Army, and as Congressional District Enrolling Officer for Georgia; was an officer in charge of prisoners at places in Virginia, Georgia, and North Carolina; and was an instructor of Light Infantry Tactics for officers at Anderson, Georgia. After the war he taught school in Georgia and Louisiana; managed loggers getting out cross ties for the Southwest Railroad; attempted to start a Masonic journal; and ran for office in Sumter County, Georgia. He died of tuberculosis in Louisiana where he was teaching school.
