Hennessy Company (Mont.)
Butte, Montana, department store.
Daniel J. Hennessy, founder of D.J.Hennessy Mercantile Company, was born in Canada in 1854. In 1879 he moved to Butte, Montana, and in 1886 opened a store which was incorporated as the D.J. Mercantile Company in 1889. The store became the most complete department store in the Northwest, and operated in close conjunction with the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. After Hennessy's death in 1908 the business was reorganized as two separate companies: Hennessy Mercantile Company, which operated the store, and The Hennessy Company, a holding company. Eventually the company opened a chain of department stores around the state.
