Carew, Jan Rynveld, 1920-2012
Jan Carew (b. 24 September 1920, Agricola Rome, British Guiana–d. 6 December 2012, Louisville, KY) grew up in Guiana and the United States. He studied at Howard University, Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University), Charles University in Prague, and the Sorbonne in Paris. While living in England, Carew was an actor, journalist, and lecturer. In 1962 he served as director of culture in Guiana. While in the United States Carew taught at Princeton, Rutgers, Illinois Wesleyan, Hampshire College, Northwestern, and Lincoln Universities. He wrote novels, short stories, plays, memoirs, and other non-fiction, as well as children's stories and books, and is best known for his first novel, Black Midas (1958).
