Murray, James A. H. (James Augustus Henry), 1837-1915

James Augustus Henry Murray was a Scottish lexicographer, best known for his pioneering work on A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles. Already a well-known philologist, he began work on an inventory of words used in English from the 12th century onward, a monumental undertaking, made possible by his knowledge and organizational skills. He worked on this groundbreaking dictionary for more than thirty years, completing about half of the project; today, the work is known as the Oxford English Dictionary.
