Smart, Clifford H.

Clifford H. Smart was born Jan. 14, 1905 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. He was a graduate of Wayne State University, receiving a B.S. in 1936 and a M.S. in 1939. Before his election to the State House, he was Superintendent of Schools at Walled Lake for 20 years. He was also a member and served as state president for the Michigan Education Association and the Association of School Administrators. He was also a member of the State Board of Michigan Congress of Parents and Teachers, and served on the Oakland County Community College Board. In 1964 as a Republican, he was elected to represent the 24th District (Oakland County) in the State House. He was chairman of the House Education Committee (1967-1968) and served as Minority Leader from 1971-1974. He retired from office in 1974. He married in 1946 and had 3 children. He was an Episcopalian, a Mason, and a member of the Rotary Club. He died on Dec. 28, 1977 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
