Kearsley, Jonathan.
Kearsley was born in Va. in 1786 and graduated from Washington College (1811). He was appointed 1st Lt. of the 2nd artillery corps during the War of 1812, and eventually rose to the rank of Assist. Adj. Gen. He lost a leg at Fort Erie. In 1817 Kearsley was appointed receiver of taxes in Va. and in 1819 became receiver of the U.S. Land Office in Detroit, a position he held for over 30 years. He served as Mayor of Detroit, Judge of the Recorder's Court, and as a member of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan, 1838-1853. Kearsley died at Detroit on Aug. 31, 1859.
