Tilden, Arnold

Dean, College of Liberal Arts, Arizona State University.

Born in Indiana, Arnold Tilden attended DePauw University, and obtained his Ph. D. in history from the University of Southern California in 1934. After working with the California Relief Administration, he joined the faculty of Arizona State Teachers College in 1937. He spent time in Korea during World War II, and in Germany following the war. After returning to Tempe in 1949, he was appointed Chair of the History Department. In 1954, he became Dean of the newly created College of Liberal Arts. After many years as a skillful administrator, he requested to be permitted to return to teaching in 1963. He retired in 1973, having earned the highest accolades as both teacher and administrator.
