Sawyer, Frederick Adolphus, 1822-1891
U.S. Senator from South Carolina. Born in Bolton, Massachusetts, Frederick A. Sawyer took charge of a normal school in Charleston, South Carolina in 1859. During the Civil War he and his family were allowed to return North. In 1865 Sawyer returned to Charleston and was active in advancing reconstruction measures. In May 1865 he was appointed collector of internal revenue in the 2nd South Carolina district.
