Pittsburgh (Pa.). Select and Common Council.
The Pittsburgh Select and Common Council worked with the mayor of the city to help stimulate growth and development. The Councilmen were appointed to Standing Committees to deal with such issues as public utilities, transportation, road improvement and emergency relief. Specifically, the Council helped alleviate some of the problems caused by the fire of 1845 and the frequent outbreaks of cholera.
