Allan, James Alexander, 1879-1967
J.A. Allan was a journalist and novelist. He contributed for many years to the 'Age', 'Argus' and 'Australasian'and wrote prose and verse for the 'Bulletin'. He was a foundation member of the Bread and Cheese Club and published several books including 'Men and manners in Australia: a social and economic sketch history' (Melbourne, Cheshire, 1945), 'The old school; its history and romance, 1852-1904' (Melbourne, University Press 1934), 'Revolution; verses' (Melbourne, 1940) and 'A wine-shop Madonna and other verses' (Melbourne, Argonaut Press, 1911). During World War II he served for two years with the A.I.F. holding a commission in the Australian Field Artillery.
