Grace, Lucille May
Lucille May Grace was the first woman to attain statewide elected office in Louisiana. She became Register of the State Land Office in 1931 on appointment of Governor Huey Pierce Long, Jr., succeeding her father, Fred J. Grace, who had died in office. She was elected in her own right in 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944, 1948, and 1956. Lucille May Grace unsuccessfully ran for governor of Louisiana in 1952.
