Roper, John S. (John Sylvester), 1842-ca. 1917.
Roper moved from Pennsylvania to Springfield, Illinois in 1856. He became a marble cutter, served in the commissary department during the Civil War, and worked for a quarry near Alton, Illinois after the war.
