Swett, Josiah, 1814-1890

Josiah Swett (1814-1890) was born in Claremont, NH, and died in Highgate, VT. He graduated with the NU Class of 1837, served in the English Department, 1836-1837, and as professor of Latin and Greek, 1840-1841. Along with Alonzo Jackman, Swett established the New England Seminary in Windsor, VT, in 1841. When the Seminary closed in 1844, both Swett and Jackman returned to NU. Swett left NU in August 1845 and served within the Episcopal Church in New Hampshire and Vermont. He served as NU trustee from 1857-1888; as secretary of the board from 1862-1876; and as acting president from 12 August 1875 until 19 October 1876. Swett married first, in 1843, Mary Jarvis Campbell (d.1845), and the couple had a daughter. He married Lucy Miranda Wheeler in 1845 and they had nine children. Swett died 4 January 1890.
