Smith, Albert H. (Albert Hamman), 1919-
Entered World War II as a 2nd Lt. (1940) and rose to Major (1944) with 16th Infantry and was at the Normandy landing (1944). From 1945-51 he served with Army Ground Forces and Second Army and Office of Comptroller of the Army. As Lt. Col. (1951-1961) he was a comptroller in USAREUR and commander of 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry; was at the Infantry School as student and instructor (1955-58); course director for USAIS; and attended the Army War College (1959-60). As Col. (1961-1966) he served in Korea and in Offices of Army Comptroller and Chief of Staff. Saw duty at Fort Carson (1964-65) and Institute of Advanced Studies (1965-66). As Brigadier General (1967-70) he was with the U.S. Southern Command and became Asst. Commander of 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam (1968-69) and was with MACV (1969-70). Became Major General in 1970.
