Gant, Luther O., 1888-1971.
Luther Gant was born in Hancock County, Indiana, in 1888. He graduated from DePauw University and did graduate work in Physics at the University of Chicago. From 1913 to 1917, Gant taught and coached at Ishpeming High School in Ishpeming, Michigan, and came to Northern Michigan College (now Northern Michigan University) in Marquette, Michigan as a coach and mathematics teacher. He served as Northern's football coach from 1919 to 1921. In 1926, Gant was appointed Registrar and became director of Admissions in 1956. He retired in 1959. In recognition of his service, Northern Michigan College awarded Gant an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1959 and dedicated Gant Hall dormitory on November 22, 1964. Gant died in 1971.
