Order of the Sons of Hermann
German American mutual protection society organized in New York City in 1840; also known as Hermann Soehne and Hermann Sons; first organized in Washington State in 1889 in Tacoma; second lodge in Seattle in 1890; and within five years lodges formed in Bellingham, Everett, Spokane, Uniontown, Walla Walla, and Chehalis; promoted love of German language and preservation of German traditions and customs as well as providing low cost insurance to its members; by 1990s all lodges in Washington State had ceased to exist.
