Lane, Harry, 1855-1917
Harry Lane, a colorful figure in Oregon politics, was the grandson of General Joseph Lane, a pioneer politician and territorial governor. Harry Lane was born in Corvallis, Oregon, in 1855. He graduated from Willamette University in 1876 and took a medical degree there in 1878. After post-graduate work in New York and a private practice in San Francisco, he settled in Portland, Oregon and eventually became the superindendent of the State Insane Asylum. He served as mayor of Portland from 1905-1909 and as the state's Democratic U.S. Senator from 1913 until his death in 1917. His daugher, Nina Lane McBride, was active in the Socialist Party around 1912-1920.
