Hurlbut, Hiram L., b. ca. 1808.

Hiram L. Hurlbut and his eldest son, Duane, left their home in Grand Isle, Lake Champlain, Vermont, for the Calif. gold fields in 1852. They lived at Coloma, where they bought shares in several gold mines. In Dec. 1852, Hurlbut's brother, Ruben, and his wife, joined them in Calif. Hiram returned to Vermont in 1853.
