Parrott, James Brackett, 1817-1890
James C. Parrott was born in Maryland and served with the 1rst United States Dragoons in the 1830s. Discharged in Iowa in 1837, he moved to Fort Madison and married Henrietta Buckhalter. They kept a store in Fort Madison and then in Keokuk. In June 1861 Parrott raised a company of men that became Company E, 7th Iowa Infantry. Captain Parrott was wounded near Belmont, Missouri in his first battle. The 7th Iowa fought with the Army of the Tennessee in Tennessee and Mississippi and then marched through Georgia with William T. Sherman's army. Parrott rose from captain to brigadier general by the end of the war and mustered out in July 1865. He served as postmaster of Keokuk, 1867-1877, and commander of the GAR Department of Iowa, 1874-1876.
