The Wynn family of Gwydir in Llanrhychwyn, Caernarfonshire was for a long period one of the most powerful families in north Wales. Their best known member was Sir John Wynn (1533 - 1627), the first baronet who was a member of the Council of the Marches of Wales, deputy lieutenant of Caernarfonshire and twice sheriff for that county.
The Bulkeley family of Baron Hill, Beaumaris in Anglesey, was another whose political and property interests gave them a great deal of influence in north Wales. This family originated from north east Cheshire and by 1450 they were settled in Anglesey, acquiring lands in that county and in Caernarfonshire. Richard Bulkeley (d. 1546 or early 1547) was knighted about 1534 and his brother Arthur (d. 1552) became bishop of Bangor.
