Maughan, David

William Barton arrived in New South Wales, 1827, as the first resident secretary and accountant of the Australian Agricultural Company. He resigned in 1832 and became an estate agent and the first stockbroker in Sydney. His son William was a representative of Sheppard and Alger, a Sydney firm, at Major's Creek, New South Wales, c.1852 and another son, Sir Edmund Barton, 1849-1920, became Australia's first Prime Minister. Edmund's daughter, Jean Alice, married Sir David Maughan. Sir D. Maughan, 1873-1955, was Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, 1924, 1936-1937, and was the leading counsel in cases concerned with the proposed abolition and reform of the Legislative Council, 1932-1934.
