Carnes, Paul Nathaniel, 1921-1979.
Paul Nathaniel Carnes (1921-1979) earned an AB from Indiana University in 1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, and on Christmas Day, 1942, he was captured by German forces in North Africa and spent the duration of the war as a German P.O.W. Following World War II, he enrolled in Harvard Divinity School, where he earned an STB in 1948. He served Unitarian parishes in Ohio, Tennessee, and New York, and served as president of the Unitarian Universalist Association from 1977 to 1979. He is the author of For Freedom and Belief: A Manual for Unitarians (1952) and Longing of the Heart: Prayers and Invocations (1979).
