Scharf, George, 1820-1895
The English draftsman, illustrator and art historian George Scharf was the son of the homonymous German-born artist settled in London in 1816. In 1840 and 1843 he travelled as official artist with a government expedition to Asia Minor. In 1857 Scharf became art secretary for the Manchester Art Treasures exhibition, and was appointed secretary to the newly founded National Portrait Gallery, becoming its director in 1882. He researched, published and lectured on British portraiture.
