Kipnis, David M.

David Kipnis received his MD degree from the University of Maryland in 1951 and house-staff training in medicine at Johns Hopkins, Duke, and the University of Maryland where he served as Chief Resident. He came to Washington University in 1955 as a research fellow with Nobel laureates Carl and Gerty Cori and joined the faculty upon completing the fellowship. He was appointed Busch Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine in 1973; Kipnis headed the Department of Internal Medicine until 1992 and is now Distinguished University Professor of Medicine. Kipnis is regarded as a pioneer in diabetes research, studying the mechanism of sugar and amino acid transport and regulation of insulin released by islet cells in the pancreas.
