Applegate, Lloyd Rogers.
Mr. Lloyd R. Applegate is a retired Methodist minister living in Ocean Grove, NJ. He began writing a biography of William August Newell when he was looking for a biography and could not find one. William Augustus Newell was the Governor of New Jersey and the Washington Territory. Mr. Newell was also a physician who became White House physician and pioneer plastic surgeon. Not only was he Governor of New Jersey but he also served three terms in Congress for New Jersey. Newell was the founder of the U.S. Life Saving Service and was instrumental in establishing the Federal Bureau of Agriculture. In 1880 Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him territorial governor of Washington. He served until 1884 when he accepted the appointment to be inspector of Indian agencies in the Northwest. After serving for a year, he resumed his practice of medicine in Olympia, WA. He remained in Olympia for 14 years. After the death of his wife in 1899, Newell returned to Allentown, NJ. On 8 Aug. 1901, Newell passed away.
