Albemarle, George Keppel, Earl of, 1724-1772

George Keppel, 3rd Earl of Albemarle (1724-1772), was 3rd Viscount Bury, 3rd Earl of Albemarle, and 3rd Baron Ashford. He was also M.P. for Chichester, Keeper and Governor of Jersey, Lord of the Bedchamber to the Duke of Cumberland, commander of the 20th Foot, and General. During the Seven Years' War, Keppel was the commander-in-chief of the invasion and occupation of Havana and west Cuba in 1762, and afterwards became governor of Cuba, though his governorship was controversial. After his return from Cuba, Albemarle became increasingly involved in politics. He followed his patron Cumberland into supporting the first Rockingham administration in 1765; after Cumberland's death, he gave his support to the Rockingham whigs in 1766. In 1770, he married Anne Miller, by whom he had a son, William Charles (1772-1849).
