Americans for Rational Energy Alternatives.

Americans for Rational Energy Alternatives (AREA) was a non-profit citizens' group incorporated in 1977 and based mostly in Albuquerque, New Mexico. AREA researched and publicized sources of energy not tied to gas or oil. For the most part, the group was interested in nuclear power. Their period of activity coincided with the beginning of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), Carlsbad, New Mexico. AREA was heavily involved in promoting this nascent project. AREA also held interests in coal production within New Mexico as well as alternative sources of energy.
