Barnett, George, 1859-1930

George Barnett (b. Dec. 9, 1859, Lancaster, Wisconsin-d. April 27, 1930, Washington, D.C.), major general in the U.S. Marine Corps, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1881 and was transferred to the Marine Corps. He served on the USS Iroquois, the USS Vermont, the USS San Francisco, the USS New Orleans, and the USS Chicago. He was assigned to the First Brigade of Marines, serving in the Philippines in 1904 and 1905, and after duty at Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C., he was Major General Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1914. He was appointed commander, Department of the Pacific, U.S.M.C. Headquarters, San Francisco in 1921, then retired in December 1923. He had spent eighteen years at sea or on duty naval stations abroad.
