Hyland, Francis Edward, 1901-
Bishop Francis Edward Hyland (1901-1968), was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta (Ga.) in 1949. When the Diocese of Atlanta was created in 1956, he was appointed its first bishop and served until his resignation in 1961. During his tenure, he built numerous chapels in north Georgia, opened two Catholic high schools, and became a strong advocate of social justice.
