Foote, Asahel, 1804-1882.

Asahel Foote (1804-1882), teacher and agriculturist of Williamstown, Mass. Following his graduation from Williams College in 1827, e taught at the Appleton Academy (New Ipswich, N.H.) and the Academy of St. Albans (Vt.). In 1832, he moved to Williamstown and opened his own boarding school. In 1842, Foote closed the school and devoted himself to agricultural pursuits. He was elected president of Berkshire Agricultural Society in 1844. He was also the founder and first president of Berkshire Horticultural Society. In 1843, Massachussets Society for Promotion of Agriculture awarded him a prize for his "Essay on the manufacture of manures." Foote served as a town selectman, surveyor of highways, and county commissioner. In 1844, he was elected member of the state Senate.
