Huebel, Harriett M.

Harriett (Aug. 20, 1890-June 27, 1959) was the daughter of William and Caroline T.H. Huebel of Traverse City (Mich.). She graduated from Traverse City High School (1910) and earned a diploma in nursing from Peterson Hospital and the University of Michigan (UM) Training School (Ann Arbor, Mich.) (1915). After working at Peterson Hospital, later Ann Arbor Private Hospital, and the UM Hospital, Harriett served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in France, Nov. 1918-July 1919. After the war, she worked as a private duty nurse at Harper, Grace, and Ford hospitals, 1919-1922. In 1922, Harriett joined Detroit's Visiting Nurses Association (VNA). She worked for VNA for 34 years, retiring on Jan. 1, 1957. She was one of the first nurses in VNA to earn a certificate in Public Health Nursing by attending night classes at Wayne State University (1936). Greatly respected and loved by her peers, Harriett died on June 26, 1959 in Traverse City (Mich.). Her surviving siblings included: Anne and Frances Huebel and Mrs. Ida Slaby. Her parents and a brother, William C. (d. 1906?), preceded her in death. Harry E. Hubel appears to have been a cousin or nephew. (Information from the collection.).
