Illinois. General Assembly. Commission to Visit and Examine State Institutions
The Illinois General Assembly established three visiting committees (1879), each composed of two Senate and five House members, to visit state charitable; penal and reformatory; and educational institutions. Committees were to examine conditions; investigate any mismanagement charges; and report to the General Assembly. When the three committees were combined into one commission composed of nine members each from the House and Senate (1947), responsibilities remained the same.
